Dave Burgering
- head coach
Dave Burgering directs the Ft. Lauderdale Diving Team. Dave has a long
history with diving as he started diving in 1967 and finished in
excellent career in1984. He began coaching for the Missions Viejo
Nadadores, as head coach, where his team won two National Team Titles in
1987 and 1988. He then took a coaching job in Boca Raton, FL for the
Mission Bay Makos, under Olympic Coach, Dr. Ron O’Brien where his team
won his third national championship beating his old team by 1 point.
Dave is now the Director of Diving for the City of Ft. Lauderdale and
Head Coach. He started his tenure for the Ft. Lauderdale Diving Team
January 15, 2007.
His diving highlights are impressive. In 1967, he started his diving
career on his school team and placed last in the City Championships. He
realized he had a future in this sport even though he did not dive well
this first year. He found a great coach, John Narcy, at Michigan State
University and started training year round. Once he made up his mind, he
became an international level athlete being named to the USA National
Team from 1977 – 1984. He traveled to Canada, Austria, Australia,
Sweden, Italy, East Germany, USSR, Venezuela, China, Japan, and Mexico
representing the USA. He won international competitions in Sweden,
Mexico, and Italy while placing in the finals in every other event
internationally he competed in. The only event he did not become a
finalist was the 1980 Olympic Games in which he made the team, but the
USA Boycotted the Games in Moscow that year.
His 21-year coaching career has proven he is one of the countries best
diving coaches. He has coached 128 junior national finalists and 46
senior national finalists. His teams traditionally place in the top 10
at every national championship, junior or senior. He is also a Dive Safe
instructor for USA Diving, that teaches instructors the proper way to
teach beginning diving safely.
