The Fort. Lauderdale Diving Team began in 1956
under the direction of Ted Keller. Ted was the coach until 1984. After
Ted, the team had two part time coaches. Then in 1991 eight-time Olympic
Coach, Dr. Ron O'Brien became the Director of
Diving and the Head Coach. During Ron's tenure, the Fort Lauderdale
diving team won 21 National Championships.
After Dr. O'Brien retired and became the
National Technical Director for USA Diving, Tim O'Brien, Ron's son,
became the Head Coach. In 2007, Tim left the sport of diving and 1980
Olympic Team member and President of USA Diving; Dave Burgering became
the Director of Diving and Head Coach of the program. Dave Started in
January of 2007.
Within his first 4 months of the program, his divers would have won the
men's team title at the Spring National Championship, bringing another
national title to Ft. Lauderdale.
However, this award was not giving out at the championships and is
unofficial. The summer of 2007 the Men's Senior Team placed 3rd and the
National Championships.
